2016 Zinfandel 'Fashauer Vyd', Anderson Valley
This vineyard just borders the Mendocino Ridge appellation which consists of ridge-top areas above 1200 feet and corresponds to the fogline. It’s the extra elevation that gives the Fashauer vines the necessary sunlight to ripen Zinfandel in the cool climate. If you’re sick of overly alcoholic, Robitussin-type fruit bombs, then as my guitar says, “Don’t Fret!”
This is leaner and fresher than its counterparts in warmer appellations, and almost brings you back to the Italian heritage of Zin’s parents, the Primitivo variety. We’re talking bright red fruits of strawberry, wild berries, red flowers, and a hint of herbs. The palate is fresh and intense with tons of acidity -- yes, acidity -- and can rock with all the things! Pasta with meat sauce, strong cheeses, duck, lamb, spicy Mexican dishes, and even turkey.
